Honey Chili shrimp is easy, quick, juicy, perfectly spiced, and has a beautiful honey flavor. This is a very good recipe for any barbecue party. With just a few easily available ingredients in your pantry, you can make this recipe.
Honey Chili Shrimp is a mouth-watering dish and is one of the best shrimp dishes you will ever try. Serve it with a side of either salad, rice, pasta, or even noodles. I like having these shrimps drizzled with marinade sauce and a side of some fresh salad. It makes a nice healthy meal that is so flavorsome.
Every summer I look forward to grilling some delicious and easy food on my barbecue machine. Over the years I have grilled a variety of dishes like Hariyali Chicken Tikka, Grilled sweet and sour Cottage cheese, Grilled Butter Chicken Tikka, and much more.

Grilled Shrimps is by far my most favorite amongst the sea of other options. That soft, delicate, perfectly seasoned shrimps are so irresistible to me. Do you love shrimps just like me?
What also highlights and takes this grilled honey chili shrimp to next level is the enticing Marinade sauce. Made with simple ingredients like honey, chili flakes, garlic, olive oil, salt, and cilantro this sauce or marinade is ready in a jiffy. I even like to make some extra on the side to pour over the top of the grilled shrimps.

Ingredients for Honey Chili Shrimp

Shrimps - some fresh, deveined large shrimps are perfect for the grilled honey chili shrimp recipe.
Honey - Honey gives a nice sweet flavor and also a beautiful charred look. When grilled on a barbecue it also enhances the smoky flavor.
Garlic - finely chopped or minced garlic.
Chili powder/paprika - You can use hot or mild chili powder or even paprika as per your spice preference in this recipe.
Chili flakes - Red pepper flakes have capsaicin in them, when you add you are turning up the flavors already present. When you do this, the capsaicin will help your taste buds pinpoint all of the flavors, and not add a ton of heat.
Cilantro - For some fresh herby taste.
Olive Oil - Olive oil help add moisture to the shrimp, prevent the acidic ingredients from dominating, and also helps tenderize. It will help lock in the flavor so that it does not dry out while being grilled.
Lemon Juice - For citrus flavor and some juicy marinade sauce.
Lemon Zest - this is totally optional. However, if you are planning to marinate the shrimps more than 2 to 3 hours in advance then it is best to use lemon zest instead of lemon juice as the citrus zest will bring out the flavor while keeping the protein intact without breaking it down.

How to make Grilled Honey Chili Shrimp
Soak the wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes to 1 hrs before using them for grilling.
Wash the deveined shrimps and pat them dry using a kitchen towel. This will help the marinade to stick better to the shrimps. Transfer the dried shrimps to a bowl.
To the shrimps add salt, chili flakes, olive oil, honey, garlic, cilantro, chili powder, lemon juice, and lemon zest.

Mix it all together so that all the shrimps are well coated with the marinade. Set it aside and let it rest for at least 30 minutes before grilling.

After it is well marinated fill the skewers with the marinated shrimps and keep them ready for grilling.

Place them on a grilling rack for grilling and cook properly from both sides. I like to place them on a grilling plate to avoid sticking to the grill rods.

Serve the freshly barbecued honey chili shrimp with the extra marinade sauce drizzled on top along with some salad.

Pro tips for cooking Honey Chili Shrimp
Always dry the shrimp - A well-dried shrimp helps with better seasoning. The marinade sticks well to the dry shrimp and will ensure a nice brown sear while cooking.
Do not overcook - Shrimps cook very fast and can easily get overcooked. Overcooked shrimp tastes rubbery. Normally 2 minutes on each side is sufficient for cooking shrimps however there are different types of shrimps and hence have different cooking times. Usually, a shrimp curls up when it gets cooked however when the shrimps are on skewers the way you can check for being cooked is when they change color and are more opaque with good golden brown charring.
Always make some extra marinade sauce - I like to serve the grilled Honey Chili Shrimp with a drizzle of the marinade sauce. It makes the shrimps taste even better so I make half a batch of marinade extra just for serving.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
What to serve with Honey Chili Shrimp?
I like to serve the Grilled Honey Chili Shrimp with some salad and a wedge of lemon. It can also be served with fried rice, plain rice, pasta, or some grilled veggies too.
Can I marinate the shrimp ahead of time or a day before?
Yes, you can definitely marinate the shrimp ahead of time, just remember to not add lemon juice at that time. Lemon breaks down the protein if kept marinated for a long time. It is best to only add lemon zest while marinating and then add lemon juice 15 to 20 minutes before grilling.

How to store shrimps?
Shrimps need to be stored properly before as well as after grilling. Shrimps are delicate fish and go bad easily. You can only leave them at room temperature for at the most 2 hours. If you marinate the shrimp early keep the marinated honey chili shrimp in the refrigerator till it's time to grill.
Cooked leftover grilled honey chili shrimp should be stored in an airtight container or wrapped in aluminum or cling wrap. Refrigerate it and it will stay good for 3-4 days. You can also freeze them for up to 3 months.
While re-heating from frozen thaw them in the refrigerator overnight and then microwave them for 20 to 30 seconds.
Can I cook the honey chili shrimp in a pan on stovetop?
Though I would recommend using a grill to cook these shrimps however if the grill is not accessible you can always cook them in a pan or griddle on a stovetop.
