Ingredients for Tilapia Burger

Tilapia - You will need boneless Tilapia fillets for this recipe. Cut the fillets into small or medium-sized cubes and pulse them in a mixer jar or a food processor or a chopper. Pulse it 2 or 3 times do not grind it too much or you will get a sticky paste. If there are any smaller chunks left it will be ok.
Garlic powder - Whenever you are making any type of patty, be it fish, chicken, or even veggies I would always recommend using garlic powder instead of garlic paste.
Egg - Large egg is needed for binding and moisture in the Tilapia patty.
Bread crumbs - I like using panko crumbs for any kind of patty. Panko has a light, airy, and delicate texture that helps the patty to become crisp as it cooks. Panko crumbs are best for any fried or pan-fried recipes as it absorbs less oil than any regular bread crumbs, keeping food more crisp and crunchy. It is perfect for this Tilapia burger.
Red Chili powder/paprika - I love spicy food so I use the hot red chili powder in my Tilapia fish patty. However, if you want to make a milder version you can use paprika or Kashmiri red chili powder instead and it will taste equally good.

Cilantro - Fresh finely chopped cilantro gives the Tilapia patties a nice herby aroma and enhances the flavors of the Tilapia burger recipe.
Black pepper powder - Black pepper adds depth to the flavors in the recipe and some hint of spice too. If possible always use freshly ground black pepper for best results.
Lemon juice - Just a squeeze of lemon brings out the flavors of any dish. The acidity in lemon cuts down the greasiness and heaviness and gives the Tilapia patty a fresh and clean taste.
Salt and Oil
How to make the Tilapia Burger patties
Cut the fish fillets into small pieces and put them in a grinder or a chopper or a food processor and pulse it for a couple or at the most three times to mince the fish. Do not over grind it or you will get a mushy paste of fish.
Transfer the minced fish into a mixing bowl.

To the minced fish add the garlic powder, red chili powder, black pepper powder, salt, cilantro, lemon juice, egg, panko crumbs, and oil.

Mix everything together using a spatula.

Using an ice cream spoon or a spoon scoop up the Tilapia burger mix.

Oil the hand and scoop up the mixture onto your palm and shape it into a round flat patty about a half-inch thick.

Heat up a pan or griddle on medium heat. Once the pan is hot enough drizzle it with a teaspoon of oil and place the fish patty on the pan.
Cook the patty for 2 to 3 minutes on each side so it cooks thoroughly.
Remove the cooked patty onto a paper towel.
Serve the Tilapia burger patty hot just by itself with some fresh green salad, a slice of lemon, a slice of onion, and tartar sauce.

Or you can serve it as a burger, toast the bun place the Tilapia patty on it, top it with tartar sauce and some salad and finish it with the other side of the bun. Enjoy it fresh!!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I use any other fish to make this burger patty?
You can use any fish for this recipe as far as it is not too soft. You can easily use salmon, haddock, cod, pomfret, or even kingfish as far as it is boneless. Each fish has its own flavor unlike Tilapia so the fish patty will take on the flavor of that respective fish too.
Can I replace panko crumbs in the Tilapia burger?
Yes, you can replace panko crumbs with regular bread crumbs however regular bread crumbs have a different texture and flavor so it will change the texture of the patty and also you will have to adjust the amount of bread crumbs that will go into the recipe as per the change.

Why is garlic powder used in the patty?
Garlic powder has a different flavor than garlic paste. It doesn't have the raw taste like the fresh garlic paste would have. Garlic paste or minced garlic is good for recipes where you cook in oil and saute it to remove the raw flavor.
However, when you are making any kind of patties it goes in the patty mixture and does not get cooked in a similar way. So it is advisable to use garlic powder instead. Garlic powder is strong so you need very little and it gives a beautiful taste to the Tilapia burger.
