Cut the 1 lb Tilapia fillet into small cubes. Put them in a grinder and pulse them a couple of times to mince it. Do not over-mince it or you will get a mushy fish paste.
Transfer the minced fish to a mixing bowl.
Add the ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon red chili powder or paprika, ¼ teaspoon black pepper powder, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 2 tablespoon chopped cilantro, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon oil, and salt to taste.
Mix it all together to make the fish patty mixture.
Heat up the pan on medium heat.
Using an ice cream scoop or a big spoon scoop up the Tilapia burger mixture.
Grease your palm with oil and scoop the mixture into the oiled palms and shape it into a round patty about 3 inches round and about ½ inch thick.
Place the patty onto the pan and cook it on both sides for about 2 to 3 minutes each. Cook it on medium-low heat so that the center also cooks properly. Cook them till they are golden brown on both sides.
Transfer the cooked patties onto a paper towel.
Serve the Tilapia patties just as they are with some salad, lemon, onion, and tartar sauce or sauce of your choice.
Or you can serve it as a burger, place the patty on the bottom side of the bun, top it with tartar sauce and some fresh green salad or coleslaw and place the other part of the bun on top. Serve it hot and fresh.
Notes
Do not over-mince the fish, you do not want a mushy fish that will lead to a very soft patty that will fall apart while cooking.
Do not overcook the patty or you will get a dry patty.
You can add ½ teaspoon of onion powder to amp up the flavors.
Cook on a medium-low flame.
